Deputy County Attorney
Hiring range for this position is $89,377.60 - $101,857.60. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 25% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 31. However, the County Manager may approve salary beyond the minimum range depending on qualifications. Cabarrus County also offers an excellent benefits package.
General Definition of Work:
As directed by the County Manager and/or County Attorney, the Deputy County Attorney oversees and supervises all aspects of legal matters related to the organization, governance, management and ongoing services provided by Cabarrus County. Performs difficult professional work providing legal assistance to county departments including the Register of Deeds and Sheriff's Office. Work performed under the general supervision of the County Attorney and County Manager.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Responding to legal inquiries; rendering legal assistance and opinions; litigating cases; drafting ordinances; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

- Represents the County in court; argues cases.
- Drafts and files motions and petitions.
- Receives and responds to legal questions and researches requests from all areas of County government.
- Drafts and reviews contracts for all County departments.
- Consults with County Attorney and outside counsel retained by County departments.
- Reviews public records requests and redacts any responsive records.
- Serves as legal counsel in enforcement matters for planning and building inspections.
- Consults with staff to prepare for quasi-judicial hearings before the Board of Adjustment and the Board of Equalization and Review.
- Assisting the Planning & Zoning Commission.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of local and State laws and court decisions pertaining to local government; thorough knowledge of legal research and the investigation, preparation and presentation of cases for trial; thorough knowledge of legal office procedures, practices and methods; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departments, Court officials, members of the bar, clients and the general public; ability to handle trial litigation; ability to prepare and render legal opinions; strong understanding of employment law; considerable knowledge of the principles of administrative and constitutional law; knowledge of federal law; .
Minimum Education / Experience requirements
Education and Experience:
Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and an active license to practice law in North Carolina. Prefer 3 years of increasingly responsible experience as a practicing attorney in municipal or government law. Attorneys in private practice will be considered.
