The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, ranked #5 in US News & World Report and among the top-ranked programs nationwide for nearly 25 years, is a complex academic and clinical department in the University of Washington School of Medicine and part of UW Medicine. Affiliated Hospitals include UW Medical Center - Montlake, UW Medical Center – Northwest, Harborview Medical Center, Veteran’s Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, and Seattle Children’s. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a CONTENT WRITER AND EDITOR.
The Communications Manager serves a cross-functional role supporting and guiding overall Department of Rehabilitation Medicine communication efforts. Under the general direction of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Administrator, The Communications Manager is responsible for day-to-day management and production of the Department’s public and internal communications, including the internet and intranet sites and listservs, newsletters, social media, email marketing, informational programs, advancement and alumni vehicles, etc. This position also manages the flow of editorial content to various Department communication channels, and produces, writes, and edits stories that inform, engage, cultivate, and recognize Department audiences. We need someone who relishes creativity and artistic expression, carefully aligns Department branding with UW and UW Medicine branding, and is adept at translating and shaping technical and scientific content effectively for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Using impeccable editorial judgment and their professional expertise telling stories in a variety of editorial and visual mediums, the Communications Manager makes a variety of editorial decisions across Department communications channels and must have the ability to write well, collaborate effectively, think strategically, juggle multiple priorities, and make sound decisions.
Content Management and Creation: 75%
Creative writing, editing, scheduling, and day-to-day management of Department communications, news, and marketing content including website and intranet updates, social media posts, event materials, print pieces, patient stories, faculty/staff/student/donor profiles, and more.
Proof communications for accuracy and adherence to brand standards.
Manage the Department event calendar and work with divisions and programs to promote events.
Design materials for public dissemination using standard graphic design, video editing, and web development applications.
Create/design and edit collateral print materials such as brochures, programs, forms, charts, signs, posters, reports, and other items as needed.
Take photos and videos and edit in post-production.
Create visual content, which may include producing, shooting, and editing short, informal videos and/or illustrating concepts through graphic design and infographs, as well as designing web graphics and layout.
Develop and customize communications templates.
Provide regular update and access support for Department intranet.
Implement User Experience design best practices to provide support for web design and content.
Travel to events or destinations to capture content. Example: Attend Review Course or Lehmann Day event to capture stories or research of Department personnel or students.
Participate on Department, School- or UW-wide committees and other forums addressing the role of communications and marketing.
Advocate for best practices.
Advertising and Marketing: 10%
Manage email marketing campaigns for the Department and its units, ensuring that all messages meet marketing goals, brand requirements, and editorial standards.
Write and edit Department email marketing messages, including the Department newsletter, event invites, and other materials.
Assist with the development, implementation and analysis of marketing plans, including media buying and promotions, direct marketing, advertising and digital communications.
Create and monitor project schedules to ensure timely and coordinated execution.
Analyze and report on campaigns, evaluating response rates and KPIs; make recommendations for optimizing results.
Support recruitment-related ad buys.
Social Media 10%
Manage, monitor, and grow integrated communications across Department social media channels, especially Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter.
Manage the Department’s social media, including monitoring social media channels, writing and editing posts, and responding to members of the UW community and general public or triaging to subject matter experts, as appropriate.
Develop, write, and produce social media content that positively reflects on the Department brand. Example: Creating original posts that take advantage of trending content. Use image software to resize a photo so it is optimized for each channel.
Coordinate and implement social media campaigns, including defining social media KPIs. Example: Working with marketing stakeholder to develop hashtag campaigns and helping them define success.
Manage social media editorial calendar. Example: Communicating with Department administration as well as research or academic units to see what upcoming content needs they have and ensuring information is posted in a timely manner.
Ensure content is informative and appealing.
Stay current with the latest social media best practices and technologies. Example: Summarizing new research and sharing it with supervisor or suggesting a new tool that could be helpful.
Provide reporting and metrics. Example: Gathering metrics for a marketing dashboard.
Provide support for multimedia content on social media platforms, such as FB Live, Instagram Live, etc.
Serve as point person for crisis and after-hours response. Examples: Respond to negative Twitter comment that needs urgent attention because it could negatively reflect on the brand. Assist or advise administrative personnel and/or faculty with social media communications during a crisis.
Miscellaneous Coordination and Administration: 5%
Use strong project management skills to ensure timely delivery of simultaneous communications products by creating, tracking, monitoring, and maintaining accurate records of projects and project status.
Help coordinate events, including production of event materials and communications or other print collateral, tracking RSVPs, and staffing events.
Help with office duties, such as tracking print materials, credit card charges and equipment, etc.
Responds to requests for information and develops correspondence as needed.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in English, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
Three years’ experience in related field, including experience and/or training in written and visual communication, graphic design or illustration, video
Excellent storytelling and creative writing abilities and demonstrated expertise in the application of writing and editing styles, e.g. AP Style.
Familiarity with the fundamentals of digital design and experience performing graphic design work for web, email, and social media, including communicating technical information through charts and diagrams.
Able to interpret technical and scientific information for a non-technical audience.
Able to write in conversational voice while still maintaining brand integrity is essential.
Able to creatively problem solve and work with multiple stakeholders.
Excellent proofreading and editing abilities.
Demonstrated experience managing Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram in a professional environment.
Understanding of social media analytics, including experience in measuring, testing, learning, and iterating in order to optimize results.
Demonstrated experience managing email marketing campaigns, producing and writing messages, and managing audience lists.
