Research Assistant/Lab Manager
Job Description
For immediate occupancy, we are seeking motivated individuals to be trained in various aspects of Covid-19 testing in two recently established testing laboratories at the FBRI in Roanoke and FLSI in Blacksburg. These are Virginia Tech positions that support the State of Virginia Health Departments, particularly serving Roanoke, Blacksburg and communities throughout the New River Valley.
We are looking for a Research Assistant/Lab Manager who can lead, support research activities and help coordinate research projects. This position will focus on quality test center protocol administration while also maintaining lab administrative responsibilities such as; ordering supplies, organizing the lab, maintaining inventory, preparing for lab inspection, arranging waste disposal, attending lab manager meetings, and training employees.
Required Qualifications
Required qualifications:
• Extensive experience in leading a biosafety level 2 laboratory or core facility with handling of potentially infectious samples; DNA and/or RNA.
• B.S. in Biological Sciences related field.
• Demonstrated experience manipulating nucleic acids
• Experience leading lab technicians who work with potentially infectious samples.
• Experience in administrative responsibilities involved in running a lab; management of materials, documentation, biosafety regulations and reporting, over lab and equipment safety, etc.
• Excellent communication and organization, must be detail oriented, and capable of working independently and as part of a team.
• Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse, multicultural environment exercising judgment and high degree of confidentiality.
This position will lead a team of up to ten lab technicians in a biosafety level 2 lab. There are two locations seeking this role; Fralin Biomedical Research Institute in Roanoke, VA., and Steger Hall Lab on Main Campus, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA. Compensation is equivalent to education and experience. Applications will be reviewed and interviews conducted immediately upon receipt as we expect to fill these positions within 2 weeks.
