Virginia Tech Covid-19 testing facilities in Roanoke and Blacksburg available immediately
For immediate occupancy, we are seeking motivated individuals to be trained in various aspects of Covid-19 testing in two recently established testing laboratories at the FBRI in Roanoke and FLSI in Blacksburg. These are Virginia Tech positions that support the State of Virginia Health Departments, particularly serving Roanoke, Blacksburg and communities throughout the New River Valley.
We are looking for a Research Technician who can support research activities and help coordinate research projects. This position requires prior experience working in a biomedical laboratory, particularly pipetting reagents and handling samples in various formats. RNA work requires cleanliness and meticulous attention to detail. The work to be conducted entails purification of inactivated viral RNA and analysis of viral RNA by quantitative PCR analysis.
Additional duties include:
• Perform validations of new methods to determine accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, normal ranges, and interfering substances.
• Identify, define, and resolve issues with complex data or unique or controversial aspects of the testing where no direct precedent exists.
• Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
• Ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
• Ability to communicate, consult, and interact with the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Supervisor, and other members of the research team.
• Knowledge and understanding of laboratory operations and their relationship to the organization sufficient enough to solve testing, quality, or customer service problems.
• Completes projects by assisting project team and attending and participating in group and project meetings.

Required Qualifications
• Some experience working in a biomedical laboratory and basic familiarity with pipetting and handling of reagents.
• Willingness to obtain training and work in a biosafety level 1 laboratory and meticulous attention to detail are essential.
• We are considering graduating college seniors for entry level technical positions, provided they have the basic skills and are available at least part time for training until graduation.
• Excellent communication and organization, must be detail oriented, and capable of working independently and as part of a team.
• Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse, multicultural environment exercising judgment and high degree of confidentiality.
